Made this last night in Electric Pressure Cooker using a 4lb Rump Roast. Flavor was excellent but meat was not tender and was dry. I have never had that problem before but wondered if it was because my rump roast had zero fat/marbling and maybe I should have used a different cut? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

      Hi Jeff-
We haven’t tried a rump roast in the pressure cooker before, but I do believe the marbling would make a big difference in texture, flavor and moisture. I would try it again with a chuck roast and you should have a much different result. Hope that helps, Cris

If you were to have forgotten to thaw your chuck roast, can you cook it frozen? How long do you add to the recipe time? Thank you!!!

Wow! Great recipe. I added one onion cut into big chunks. When almost done, I’ll add a bag of little carrots, then a few minutes later, I’ll add some chunks of potatoes. Excellent one pot meal! Thanks!!!!!!!!

FAQs

Can you Slow Cook in an electric pressure cooker? ›

Most Electric Pressure Cookers Can Also Slow Cook!

If your electric pressure cooker has a 'slow cook' setting: Use 'slow cook' recipes and/or instructions formulated for your unit. Be flexible and determine which foods you and your family like better slow cooked vs. pressure cooked.

Can a pressure cooker act like a Crockpot? ›

Touted as the do-it-all appliance for good reason, an Instant Pot is a multi-function pressure cooker that easily doubles as a slow cooker. The difference between pressure cooking and slow cooking is substantial, so we love that one appliance can do both, along with a slew of other cooking methods.

Is it better to Slow Cook or pressure cook a roast? ›

Some people prefer a roast that has more substance, so if you do, the Instant Pot is the winner. I have tried cooking a roast for up to 120 minutes in the Instant Pot and the texture still didn't match a slow cooker, but every 10 minutes of added pressure cooking will definitely make the meat more tender.

Why is my pot roast not tender in the pressure cooker? ›

Why is My Roast Tough? If your roast is tough in the Instant Pot, it likely needs to be cooked longer. Chuck roast will become more tender the longer it cooks, so extra time may be needed. However, you can overcook beef in the Instant Pot, so keep an eye on it if you add extra time.

Is an electric pressure cooker better than a slow cooker? ›

Yes, cooking in a pressure cooker is healthy. Unlike a slow cooker, which cooks foods for a long time at a lower temperature, pressure cookers do use high heat when cooking - but not for a long time. This means that most of the nutrients won't be lost.

Which makes meat more tender slow cooker or pressure cooker? ›

Traditionally cheaper cuts of meat always slow cook better. Slow cooking breaks down the connective collagen in meat, which turns into unctuous gelatine. This creates that soft and tender mouth feel we all crave.

Is there a combination slow cooker and pressure cooker? ›

The first Instant Pot was a multi-cooker that combined slow cooking, pressure cooking, rice cooking, sautéeing, steaming, and more in a single appliance. It was an instant hit, and since then the brand has made ever smarter models that can do even more.

Does pressure cooker taste as good as slow cooker? ›

Both appliances produce deep flavors.

Slow cookers utilize long cooking times to develop these richer flavors, while pressure cookers use high heat and pressure to impart as much flavor as possible in a shorter time.

Why is my roast still tough after pressure cooking? ›

If you find that it's still tough after cooking, you'll need to cook it for another 10 to 20 minutes at high pressure – it just needs a bit longer to continue to brine and break down the connective tissue.

Can you overcook a roast in a pressure cooker? ›

Steam penetrates food easily under pressure. So connective tissues in cubes of beef for soups or stews soften in 15 minutes or less, and a pot roast will be medium-rare in 30 minutes. Be sure to follow instructions carefully; at this speed, it's easy to overcook things in mere minutes.

Does pressure cooking a roast make it tender? ›

If it's still tough, you will need to cook it longer. The pressure cooking process breaks down tough meat, making it tender. Put the lid back on, seal the pressure cooker, and cook at high pressure for another 10 to 20 minutes.

How long do you cook 2 lb of meat in a pressure cooker? ›

For a whole roast: Cook on high pressure for 20 minutes per pound of meat. For small chunks: Cook on high pressure for 15 minutes per pound of meat.

What is the best meat for pot roast? ›

The best meat for pot roast is a beef cut with abundant connective tissue, like chuck roast, beef brisket or bottom round roast. This connective tissue called collagen is what makes pot roast melt-in-your-mouth tender.

How long does it take for meat to become tender in a pressure cooker? ›

Conventional cooking calls for long, slow braising to ensure a melt-in-your-mouth outcome. The pressure cooker cuts the cooking time but yields fork-tender meat. That was the case with two pounds of cubed beef chuck that cooked to juicy and soft in just 20 minutes.

Can you can meat in an electric pressure cooker? ›

Important Fact: USDA does NOT endorse using their canning processes or processing times in electric, pressure-cooker appliances. The appliances are acceptable for cooking, but not canning. It is especially dangerous to use these appliances to attempt to can meat or vegetables.

Do you close pressure valve when slow cooking? ›

If you were using a pressure setting, make sure the Steam Release Valve is in the “Seal” position. Otherwise, the Steam Release Valve should be placed in the “Release” position if you were trying to use a non-pressure setting (like Slow Cook).

Do you vent a pressure cooker when slow cooking? ›

What Venting Setting Should I Use to Slow Cook in My Instant Pot? If you use the normal lid, make sure the value is set to venting because we are not trying to build up pressure to use this setting. You could also use the Instant Pot glass lid accessory, but you may already have a pot lid that will do the job.

Do you close the vent on a pressure cooker when slow cooking? ›

Another tip, taken from an Instant Pot Facebook group, is to open the valve all the way on your Instant Pot lid when slow cooking. This allows some moisture and steam to release and keeps the Instant Pot from overcooking your slow cooker recipes.
